THE RIBBLE WAY RUNS FLOWS FROM ITS SOURCE IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES TO ITS RIVER MOUTH BEYOND PRESTON

Introduction
The Ribble Way is 71 miles long and starts outside the Dolphin Inn just beyond Longton, outside Preston and 5 miles from the river mouth. it starts on a raised levee that separates the estuary's salt marsh from reclaimed farmland. Just beyond the levee is the River Douglas which flows 35 miles from Winter Hill, one of the most famous large hills in the West Pennine Moors. It is too difficult to cross the river Douglas and the salt marsh, otherwise the Ribble Way would have begun closer to the river mouth. The Ribble Way mostly follows the River Ribble all the way to its source on the Yorkshire Moors, just above the Dales Way near to Gearstones.
My wife Carol accompanied me on this walk in May 2007, walking from the Longton end of the Way to its source. Between us we had 2 cars and would park one at each end of the day's walk.
